Here is a step-by-step write-up on my expericence rebuilding a Honda alternator. The brushes (probably the most likely item to fail) are very easy to replace. The front bearing is also pretty easy to replace, but the rear bearing (if it is necessary to replace it) is difficult to get out and might require a special puller.

Water pump replacement is a good starter project. It is pretty straightforward, there are no special tools required and there shouldn’t be any rusty fasteners to deal with. Often a failing water pump makes a clattering noise or rattling noise. In addition, sometimes a failing pump will have noticeable play in the pulley (with the serpentine belt removed) or may start leaking. The upper ball joint is not independently replaceable (at least with an OEM part) but instead the entire upper control arm must be replaced as a unit. The following PDF has a step-by-step write-up on my experience replacing the upper control arm:
